Little Beth’s ‘Pintsized’ Walk

Beth Macquillan may be tiny but this little girl from Ahoghill has a big heart.  Beth will be celebrating her 3rd birthday by leading a ‘pintsized’ 5k sponsored walk around Portglenone Forest on Saturday 11th April 2009.  The walk will help raise funds for TinyLife, Northern Ireland’s only premature baby charity and the neo-natal unit in the Antrim Area Hospital.

When Beth was born she arrived 14 weeks early, weighing just 1lb 4oz. Beth spent the first 115 days of her life in the neo-natal intensive care unit at the Antrim Area Hospital.

Her mum Gillian recalls ‘Beth was seriously ill, she had to be ventilated for 3 days and spent 4 1/2 weeks on CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) to help her breathe.  Beth had many complications to overcome including chronic lung disease, pneumonia and nine blood transfusions.  We never believed we would get the chance to bring her home’.

Beth’s dad Tommy says, ‘Beth was only the size of a pint of milk when she was born.
I vividly remember one of the neo-natal nurses patting Beth on the back.  When I asked was she winding her she told me no, I’m trying to keep her alive!  It is hard to believe after all the heartache and worry, that today Beth is a feisty toddler due to celebrate her 3rd Birthday on Easter Saturday.  We can’t thank the staff at Antrim Area Hospital neo natal unit enough. We received amazing support and care, it is now time to give something back.  Our goal is to raise enough money for TinyLife to refurbish the family room in the neo-natal unit in Antrim Area Hospital . We would like to encourage as many people as possible to join us on the walk.’
